A few years ago I was finishing college, raising children, and working part-time when I received a bad health diagnosis. My doctor thought I should try changing my habits before I started taking any medication for my high blood pressure. She suggested I make a list of all the things that were creating stress in my life. I was overworked, tired, sedentary, eating poorly, and overweight. Worst of all, I had been beating myself up about these things for years.

Next, I reorganized my list, placing the things I could change at the top and what I could not at the bottom, with an honest ordering of items in between. Could I change my genetics? Not yet. Could I exercise more? Probably. I transformed my list of stressors into a prioritized “to-do” list, and started using it.

Shortly after, while visiting my parents, my husband used one of my father’s blood pressure monitors to determine that his own future looked bleak. We both had unignorable family histories of heart disease, and every time we went to a grocery store or pharmacy for the next year, he would sit himself down at one of those blood pressure machines. Though I gently prodded him to just go to the doctor, it took him over a year to finally do so.

After he finally submitted to some not-so-rigorous testing, he was relieved to find that his prognosis was not so grim. Yes, he needed to change a few things, exercise more, eat less, but I can assure you that the stress he was undergoing worrying about his health was far worse.

It is rare for me to do everything on my list in a day, but I always do something, and it’s worked. My blood pressure is lower today. It’s hard for me to believe that it used to be so hard for me to sleep well and sit still to do nothing for 20 minutes each day, but when I did, I started to feel more balanced, and eating well and exercising more followed quickly.
