You and your cooling system

Explains your cooling system and basic maintenance
Your cooling system and you

When was the last time you checked out the cooling system in your car? Not the air conditioner silly. The cooling system keeps your cars engine cool so that it runs at peak performance and doesn’t overheat and leave you stranded somewhere inconvenient.

You should look under the hood of your car at least once a month. These are some things to look for: bulging radiator hoses, loose belts, improper antifreeze mix, leaking radiator, bad hose connection, sticky thermostat or bad radiator cap. If you find any of these danger signs, get it fixed or replaced right away. Neglecting these items is a main reason for many breakdowns and can cause thousands of dollars in repairs later.

Use a simple antifreeze tester that you can buy at any automotive parts store to test your antifreeze. It should be at 70% antifreeze and 30% water.

Your radiator cap assures that your system is operating at the optimal pressure for your vehicle. Make sure it fits well and snug and is the proper type for your vehicle.

If you press down on your drive belts and get more than a inch of give then they are too loose. Also check their overall condition is there breaks or cracks. If a belt breaks on you it could cause overheating, loss of power steering or a dead battery. Get them tightened or in the event of cracks, replaced right away.

Just taking five minutes to check these items on a regular basis can save you money, time and the hassle of a break down when you least want it.

Story And Screenplay Structure

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Structure is beneficial to creative output in a number of ways.

There are at least two types of structure, work processes and frameworks:

a) Work processes such as incremental production produce more output than a “do your best” approach. Writing four pages a day completes a words-on-paper first draft screenplay in one month. A “do your best” or “waiting for inspiration” approach can take months or years.

b) Work processes such as separating creative from critical thinking allow the build up of large idea pools using creative thinking and the reduction of those pools into feasible ideas using critical thinking.

c) Frameworks reduce complex problems into their component intellectual parts. For example, story structure can be reduced to three or four acts or The Hero With A Thousand Faces (Campbell, 1973). Frameworks increase output by reducing complex problems into smaller, more manageable problem solving exercises. In screenwriting, frameworks tell the writer where to start, where to finish, what to write and what should be happening at a particular stage of the story.

Additionally, a structured approach improves performance in a number of ways, including:

a) Simply being prolific improves performance. The single best creative product tends to appear at that point in the career when creator is being most prolific. Experience refines knowledge and methodology towards optimal levels.

b) Engagement in the tasks results in problem identification and triggers the mind into working on those problems at various cognitive levels. Problems incubate until answers become apparent. Increasing the incidence and frequency of problem identification increases the incidence and frequency of insight. In other words, simply engaging in the project generates good ideas, insights and inspiration, which is why screenwriters often find that their best ideas come to them when they are in the middle of writing a screenplay.

c) Increased problem identification (coupled with motivation) increases the incidence of solution seeking, through active search for stimuli and intellectual cross pollination through networks and collaboration.

Self-Esteem In Children

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Think of how the world would change for the better if all our children knew how precious they are and lived their lives in that belief? Self-love isn’t vanity or arrogance but a genuine confidence and having a healthy relationship with one’s own inner being.

Those of you who are parents of young children are probably wondering how you might improve your child’s self-esteem. After all, the home is the first learning-place.

* Firstly, think back to the things that made you feel small and helpless when you were a child. Make a list of them and vow never to do those things to your children, in other words, learn from your parents’ mistakes. Remember parents are only people after all, therefore, imperfect. Whatever you got in childhood that you didn’t like, don’t repeat them but DO repeat the things that made you feel safe, loved and valued.

* All children are powerless, even the most confident, assertive ones. They are at the mercy of your whims, moods, choices and behaviours. To a large extent, this has to be the case to undue pressure, and it begins in the home.

Sexuality.

I believe we are born sexual and remain so all of our days. Sexuality is part of the life-force and has little to do with genitals or intercourse. Of course a baby or a boy entering puberty doesn’t know this. He only feels physical urges that he wants to cater to.

This is why education in this area is so vital. When parents have said to me that they don’t like talking to their children about sex because it’s embarrassing, it makes my blood boil. At a seminar I did recently, I was amazed and pleased to hear from the male participants that they don’t actually enjoy casual sex, that they feel something is missing in one-night stands and they much prefer making love to someone they know and care about.

The future.

Boys today will grow up to be wonderful husbands, if current indications hold true.

Young men getting married in the 21st century expect to be equal partners, participate fully in parenting and help run the household. This is one of the better changes that have taken place in the last 5-10 years. Some guys are opting for full-time parenting, boys can look forward to more choices in the future regarding jobs, income-earning and retirement and they may not have to do all the initiating for dates and sexual exchanges. But what are the new pressures that come with these new roles? Men in 2005 are floundering because they have lost their conventional identities of breadwinner, the `strong one,’ sexual predators (sorry, guys) and society’s movers and shakers but boys now will grow up to very different behaviour patterns, in the boardroom, in the bedroom, in families, in the home, out on dates and in the community at large. They will take for granted the presence of women in all areas of society and hopefully, therefore, respect them more, personally and professionally. We need to educate boys now about these changes and help them to develop strong identities that are grounded in spiritual reality rather than social myth.

Males tend to deal with their pressures very differently. Females network and vent their feelings; men stay silent, drink and get ulcers. That too will be different for the boys who will be men in the future. There is a lot more awareness of health issues these days, right from safe sex to fitness and diet, prevention of disease. stress management, etc. The key point is that we want to break the cycle of workaholism, smoking, excessive stress, pent-up emotions and the burden of too much duty that our fathers and grandfathers lived with and accepted. Let boys know when they’re small that they’re allowed to cry, talk about their feelings and be vulnerable.

Children have a right to grow up and expect vibrant relationships, healthy, long lives, creative choices and fulfilling careers. Even the uncertainties in the workplace that has developed in recent years I see as a positive thing because we no longer have absolute security to bank on, there has to be a lot more accountability and creativity in the way we work.

Right now, because you are the guardians of your children and therefore, have to make decisions that affect them on a daily basis, even in the most basic matters such as what they eat. Where there is a margin of flexibility, give way, for example, allow them to pick their own clothes sometimes, or the decor of their rooms; don’t keep unnecessary secrets, be as honest and open as possible. Ask questions with candour and admit when you’re wrong.

* Give tons and tons of praise, for effort if not achievement, and very little criticism, if any. Evaluate rather than judge and never be negative about attempts at new things no matter how seemingly unsuccessful. Offer loving discipline and boundaries, rules for learning and strength, not rules for their own sakes or to make your lives as parents easier. Ask and listen , don’t just tell and command. Try to speak quietly and explain the reason for your displeasure, rather than just yell indiscriminately.

Criticise behaviour but not the person.

* Children see you spend time with the things and activities you love so if you don’t spend time with them, they automatically assume you don’t love and enjoy them. Children tend to take on the burden of guilt very easily so be careful of what you say in their hearing. A careless remark said in an unguarded moment and overheard by a child could destroy its sense of wellbeing and the damage can be far-reaching.

Time and attention are the most precious gifts you can give a child. Do simple things together and give of yourself freely. It’s far more important than toys or games or expensive holidays. Love and laughter and shared fun will be remembered well into adult life.

* The parents of past generations did not know the importance of such gifts as touch, attention, hugging, praise so we can’t blame those who did not supply these to their children. I’ve even had a guy tell me he never praised his son because he didn’t want him to get big-headed! Now we know that a child can never be loved or praised or hugged too much; indeed, we have bumper stickers on cars that advise, `Hug a child a day!’ We know now that these gifts are more vital to a child’s emotional and physical health than food, shelter and clothing. So there’s no excuse for modern parents, I’m afraid.

* Communicate clearly and positively in all areas of life. Sex education is particularly crucial. If a child feels listened to and heard ( not always the same thing!) this will do wonders for its self-esteem. If he/she asks an uncomfortable question and you don’t flinch from it but explain as clearly as you can, the child will be perfectly satisfied but if you prevaricate, you will set up doubt and self-criticism. Never make a child feel `dirty’ for having a normal interest in sexual matters, especially their own bodies. So many female eating disorders and also sexual hangups stem from poor body image learnt in childhood.

* Give unconditional love. I don’t believe that parents really withdraw their love when

they are angry with their children but rejection combined with the removal of approval can translate in a child’s mind to being unloved, being `bad.’ So it is vital to always emphasise that it’s the action or behaviour you’re angry with, not the child. When forced to criticise or discipline, always do it in a loving way. I realise that this is a tall order but the results are worth the effort. A child that feels loved under all and any circumstances will be emotionally strong indeed and have an iron-clad self-esteem which will serve him/her all through their future lives.

Summary: How to teach a child self-esteem -

* Learn from your own childhood experiences

* Be as flexible as you can be

* Give lots of praise and minimise criticism

* Share lots of time and attention

* Lots of physical affection and demonstration of love

* Communicate clearly

* Unconditional love

4 Tips For Clearing The Clutter

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

Spring…. Fresh breezes through open windows, sleeping trees come awake with bright new leaves, flowers begin to bloom and the grass becomes green once more. Now along with the obvious, there is another sign that the season has arrived, our yearly pledge to clear the clutter and organize our homes. I’m not sure why this happens, maybe we humans after months of cold, gray winter days are over come with the feelings of clean, fresh and new. Well, whatever the reason, we always start with good intentions, but like those New Years Resolutions, many of us rarely follow through. So let’s try something new this year by making a pledge to really get stuck in and finally accomplish our task. The following are a few ideas and tips to help make the “Clear The Clutter” task a little easier and maybe even fun.
1. One Room At A Time
The first thought to keep in mind is that this particular project is not one you can hurry up and have done by yesterday. By working through one room at a time, you will have a much better chance of successfully completing the job. Here is a thought to keep in mind. “You did not accumulate all your stuff in a day, so why does it have to be cleared out in a day”.
2. Sort Items Into Categories
Your first step will be to sort items into the following 3 categories, it will make the task go a lot easier.

a) Have to Keep
b) Maybe…Not 100% Sure
c) Definitely Not

Once you have completed this part of the project, you will more than likely find the “Definitely Not” pile is the smallest one. What is it a professional might call this “Separation Anxiety”? However, don’t worry, almost everyone ends up this way, after all it is not easy parting with our things, even if it is something you have not used in years.
3. Re-Sort Once More
Try to be as realistic as possible here, remember the goal is to “Clear The Clutter”.

a) Not Sure Group
This group is easy: If it is already here, more than likely, you will never use it so into the “Definitely Not” pile it goes.

b) Have To Keep
This could be the hardest pile to sort, so a tip to remember: If you have not used something in the last year, chances are you probably will not use it again. This applies to everything from shoes to car cleaners; however if there is something you never use but has a special memory attached, keep it.

Gifts can be a tricky area, one thing to keep in mind just because someone gave you something, it does not mean you must keep it forever. So that figurine that great aunt Edna gave you years ago or the bird made of shells from a friends vacation does not need to keep collecting dust on your bookcase.

Now, you may wonder about things from your children. I use to keep everything my daughters brought home from school. Finally, I decided to go through and keep one or two items from each grade, put them into a plastic storage box labeled Sherri & Ashley - School - K-12. Now all school memories are safe and in one place, this is a useful idea for grandparents.

Once you have finished your resort, you have a couple of choices for those “Definitely Not” items, depending on their condition, either just pitch them, give them away or have a tag sale and make yourself a little money.
4. Organize & Store What Is Left
Now is the time to put what is left away, by organizing you will not only have tidy shelves, closets and cabinets but you will be able to put your hands on what ever it is you need.

There are numerous storage options for every room in your home. Plastic boxes come in a variety of sizes and colors and are inexpensive. Stacked on a closet shelf, clear smaller sizes make perfect storage for extra shoes, winter gloves, pictures or how about extension cords, nails, packages of hooks or hand tools. Larger sizes can keep extra winter coats, blankets, odd season clothes or seasonal decorations neat and in one place. Baskets, hampers even seldom used suitcases can be useful, stacking plastic milk crates are perfect for kids room.

How about those cluttered kitchen cabinets, plastic tiered risers work wonderful for stacking cans of soup, veggies or spaghetti sauce, this makes use of wasted space and you are able to see at a glance what you have. One area everyone has is the famous “Junk Drawer”; these can be kept organized with silverware trays. By buying individual pieces in different sizes, you can customize each drawer to fit exactly what you need.
The lesson here is that by having a little patience, taking your time and giving some thought to your storage needs, you can not only “Clear The Clutter” but also have an organized home.

Roulette Tips and Tricks !

Roulette is the oldest of all the casino games. A roulette wheel is round and has 38 separately numbered pockets in which the rotating ball may land. The numbers change back and forth between red and black; the first red number is number one. 0 and 00 are both green. If a player bets on a single number, he is paid 35 to 1. This means that the casino has the advantage of 2 out of every 38 spins. So, roulette, like any other gaming event must rely on both luck and strategy.

BETS:

You may bet on two numbers by placing your chip (or chips) on the line between two numbers such as 2 and 3. Payment is 17 to 1.

You may bet on four numbers by placing your bet between 4 numbers such as 2, 3, 5, 6 and upon winning be paid 8 to 1.

You may bet on three numbers by placing a chip on the transversal such as 1, 2, 3 by placing the chip on the outer line of 1. Payment is 11 to 1.

You may bet on five numbers only in one set; they are 0, 00, 1, 2, 3. Since 31 is not divisible by 5 it pays only 6 to 1.

You may bet on six numbers by placing your chip on two transversals, such as the outer edge of numbers 7 and 10 to cover numbers 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. This bet pays 5 to 1.

You may bet on 12 numbers by placing your bet on the 2to1 space at the end of the table and play 1, 4, 7, 10,13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34 or either of the other two rows of numbers; or by placing your chip in 1st 12, 2nd 12, or 3rd 12. Each bet pays 2 to 1.

You may bet on 18 numbers by placing your bet on either a color spot - red or black, on an even or odd spot, or on 1 to 18, or 19 to 36. Pays 1 to 1.

Seem simple enough? Well it is quite easy. Just wait till a spin has been completed and all bettors have been paid and then place your bet.

The following section shows you five simple systems you may want to use to win at roulette.

Never bet more than you can afford to lose, and always quit when you have won as much as you set out to win - such as double your stake.

There are table minimums and maximums at all casinos and most casinos have different tables with different amounts. *Each posted on the table.

A typical minimum is 25 cents per bet with a 75 cent minimum per spin of the wheel. This covers bets on numbers only *-* other bets such as 1st 12 etc. will have a $1 minimum.

Now, read and learn each system detailed below before you try any of them at a casino - pick one or two you want to try.

SYSTEM ONE:

This is a simple game of colors. Black and red. This has also been called a suckers bet and an absolutely terrible system because it does not go with the odds. However, it has consistently won for both myself and a large number of others. Because 1/2 of the numbers are red, and 1/2 black ( minus of course the casino advantage of 0 of 00 ) a bet on a red or black number coming up has a 50-50 chance of winning. If you were able to accurately pick the correct color every-other spin, you would break even, minus 2 in every 38 spins ( for 0, 00 ). With this in mind, try the following:

Bet on a color. If you win, take your winning and leave your original bet for the next spin. ( A good idea is to start at $1 if you are interested in playing for a long period of time and maybe winning some money. You can bet more such as $3 to $5 if you can afford it and are hoping to win some big money ). If you lose, double your bet. If you continue to lose you may wish to continue doubling your bet, or quit and take the lose. Then start over again, as long as you win, take your winnings and leave your original bet.

Remember, you ALWAYS have the same odds of your bet winning even if the other color has come up 100 times in a row. I have had nights when I never lost more than 3 straight times, but I have also seen the same color come up 12 straight times.
