Porcelain Veneers by GlamSmile
Thursday, August 14th, 2008As the demand for, and popularity of porcelain veneers increases, predictably there are increasing numbers of entrepreneurs attempting to capitalize on perceived opportunities. One such company is Den-Mat, Inc., manufacturer of Lumineers ®. A more recent entrant into this growing market is GlamSmile.
If you have spoken to your dentist about porcelain veneers, you are aware that it is a complex process that takes a few hours over the course of two appointments to do properly; it also requires a great deal of training, skill and experience in order to apply them properly, as well as an artistic eye.
GlamSmile claims their product can be applied in only an hour, and are therefore much less expensive than traditional types of porcelain veneers.
Herein lies the danger. GlamSmile veneers are marketed primarily to practitioners of general dentistry who have little or no training in cosmetic dentistry techniques. In fact, it is marketed as “The first veneer system every dentist can deliver and every patient can afford.” The company’s target market consists of (A) general dentistry practitioners who are seeking to increase their income quickly and substantially, and (B) consumers of limited means who desperately want a quick, inexpensive fix for their cosmetic dental issues. According to the company website, their “proven training method will enable you to begin offering veneer smiles within no time at all.” The income opportunity is especially attractive to young dentists in the U.S. who are just beginning their practice and are often saddled with student debt running into six-figures.
According to more experienced cosmetic dentists, the problem here is not necessarily with the GlamSmile product, but with the idea that cosmetic dentistry can be done based on an assembly-line mass-production model. Commercial products such as GlamSmile and Lumineers ® may be as good as any other porcelain veneers, but applying them properly and making them look good still requires intensive training and experience as well as the artistic sense of a gifted cosmetic dentist.
In the end, it is the artist, not the media, that makes for a porcelain veneers masterwork.
